Based on a pleinair piece, this studio work captures the boundary between surf and stone…the power of the sea against the land in Majesty. 30”x40” oils on stretched canvas.
Based on several pleinair works this large and dramatic piece catches Bodega Head just before sunset in early Autumn. The haze created an atmospheric effect combined with the warmth of the setting sun’s rays bouncing off the cliff faces. The ocean was in a deep rhythmic roar, but not pounding. Strength with grace…..at sunset.

Informed by a pleinair piece created on the Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill Country, this 24”x30” oils on stretched canvas work pushes the bright light after a passing storm still receding off to the right distance. The river bend shapes a light colored bluff which reflects in the river, competing with the bright sunlit foliage on the surrounding cliffs. Signed “Callaway” lower right front.

Having made several transits of the Panama Canal, I’ve captured numerous pleinair works on each of them. Each lock transit is only about 15-20 minutes before you move on to the next lock. An amazing experience, truly! We had an aft room on one of the transits and this large work is a compilation of the pleinair work created, sketches, and photographs from that and other journeys. The grass is incredibly green….the colors of the waters bounce reflections and the “mules” run up and down the inclined tracks tugging the ships through the locks. Remember your trip with this work!

Inspired by a couple of pleinair pieces created on location, this larger studio work captures the light bounce off the bluff and on the slow moving water of the river in the morning. The early sunlight was glancing down the canyon at Guadalupe River State Park when I painted the smaller pleinair pieces and this work loosely and expressively collects those images into one grand work….”Guadalupe Bluff”.
